Situation
Captain D's faced difficulty in hiring, training,
and retaining entry-level workers in a robust economy. Potential
hires were either uninspired or transient, and in most cases, undecided
about their future and uncommitted.
The company wanted to create computer-based training (CBT) that would
inspire as many workers as possible to see the company as a promising
career path. It also sought to preserve standards for service
and procedures while delivering this content in a more efficient
manner.
Solution
Little Planet created a CBT program filled with stories,
game shows, and product and procedure photos. The program is delivered and managed
via Captain D's custom satellite system to an in-store computer. The tone of
the content portrays the hourly workers as valuable, intelligent, and vital to
the organization.
- Employees receive a solid orientation and learn paths of opportunities.
- They are trained on tasks in a specific sequence that leads
to effective cross-training on other positions and tasks.
- Users take tests on content areas and are rewarded with pay
increases and merchandise that carries the CBT design.
Results
"Captain D's 7,000 employees
have demonstrated the benefits of this program in the year since
we began using it. Little Planet's challenge-based
approach to learning is enjoyable for the participants and very
effective for the company. Within months of deploying the program,
we began to see positive results.
"Employee turnover dropped to 150 percent.
Five years ago, we were at 225 percent. Customer satisfaction
has increased by 5 percentage points during the short time we've
been using Little Planet's training program, reaching a company
all-time high of 84.5 percent. Our ability to quickly and thoroughly
cross-train employees has also improved significantly."
